Therapy Dog in Training

About

I’m Kuba, a Goldendoodle puppy (a mix of Golden Retriever and Miniature Poodle) currently training to become a therapy dog at The Tunbridge Wells Psychologist.

Research has shown that therapy dogs can help reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and provide comfort during difficult conversations. Their calming presence can make the therapy environment feel warmer and more welcoming, and stroking a dog has been shown to release oxytocin - the “feel-good” hormone.

My Interests

  • Learning how to chill out in the clinic room
  • Chewing on my favourite toy
  • Being stroked and giving gentle cuddles
  • Earning treats for good behaviour
  • Practising my “calm and settle” skills
  • Greeting new friends with a wagging tail
  • Napping in my cosy bed between training sessions

My Training Journey

I’m currently working hard on my therapy dog training, learning important skills like staying calm around new people, settling quietly during conversations, and being a reassuring presence without being a distraction.

In time, I hope to pass my therapy dog certification and join sessions for clients who would like me to be there as an extra source of support and comfort. Not everyone wants a furry friend in their session, and that’s absolutely fine - I’ll only be there when specifically requested.

Why Therapy Dogs Help

Having a therapy dog present during sessions can:

  • Help people feel more at ease and less anxious
  • Provide a comforting focus during difficult moments
  • Create a warmer, more relaxed atmosphere
  • Offer unconditional acceptance and support
  • Give something soft and soothing to stroke when talking feels hard

I can’t wait to complete my training and start making a difference!
